New iQ urban car
Toyota unveils the new iQ at the Geneva Motor Show. The iQ is a sophisticated urban car that packs space for 3+1 passengers into a design less than three metres long. Six revolutionary design and engineering innovations provide yet more choice for Toyota’s growing range of urban cars.
iQ is an expression of individuality and quality, designed to offer the urban mobility, refinement and sophistication that modern buyers demand.
Production starts in late 2008.
Urban Cruiser, new compact SUV
Also on show is Urban Cruiser, a design preview of Toyota's new compact SUV. Aimed at the urban all-road market, the Urban Cruiser is a thoughtful answer to the challenge of providing the commanding driving experience of an SUV to consumers with growing concerns about fuel bills and the environment.
Rugged SUV styling is applied to a practical, compact, five-door bodyshape that is ideal for urban manouvers. Projected CO2 emissions are below 140g/km and production is scheduled to start in 2009.
Already in an advanced stage of research and development, Toyota’s Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHV) tackles the challenge of lowering the environmental impact of cars in urban areas. For short trips the car draws power from its battery. For longer journeys the PHV acts like a conventional hybrid, powered by both engine and battery. Practical, flexible motoring with lower emissions, better fuel efficiency and longer range – Toyota delivers intelligent solutions to the problems of the modern world.
1/X hybrid plug-in concept
Geneva is also the showcase for the Toyota 1/X Plug-in Hybrid and Flexible Fuel Vehicle. The focus of this innovation is efficiency through weight reduction. Offering the interior space of a Toyota Prius, the 1/X weighs in at just 420kg and makes a fuel efficiency target of just 2.7l/100km viable. The benefits of such lightweight products are obvious - and when combined with Toyota's Hybrid innovations offer genuine scope for pushing new frontiers in vehicle design.
i-Real personal mobility concept
Building on previous personal mobility innovations such as 2003's i-Unit and i-Swing concepts, the i-Real is the latest Toyota mark on the future horizons of zero emissions urban transport.
The driver steers by shifting their bodyweight in a wraparound 'armchair’. i-Real’s electric battery gives a 30km range from one of two driving modes. Its vertical position and wheelbase adapt to driving speed, making it flexible enough to use within a pedestrian environment or, at higher speeds, as the perfect answer to urban mobility.
